Technical Issues & Problems

What are the System Requirements for the lessons?

All of the related files are compatible with Mac & PC. A CD/DVD writer isn’t necessary but will be useful if you want to burn the lessons to CDs for your stereo system. The Singg.tv web site is compatible with the following Internet browsers Internet Explorer 7+, Firefox 2.5+, Safari 3.0+ and Google Chrome.

In what format does the ebooks come in?

The ebook version of the program, as all the related documents, comes in PDF format, which is viewable on both PCs and Macs. In order to view a PDF file, you need the Adobe Acrobat Reader software installed on your computer. If you don’t already have it, you can download it for free at: Abobe.com

What type of internet connection will I need?

For streaming, you will probably want to have a high-speed option like Cable or DSL. Slower modem speeds or other low-speed options do not stream very well so you are better off downloading the files at once.

Why can’t I play the videos?

You need to install Apple QuickTime to view any of our downloadable high quality videos. Are you trying to play *movie clips* or are you trying to play a *streaming video*? The two are completely different. Streaming movies require that you have nothing on your computer or network that could interfere with the communication between our streaming servers and your computer. The following can cause blockage of these transmissions and therefore the inability to play streaming movies: Corporate networks, hotel networks, badly configured home router, or a wireless network.

To test your players, please do not use the streaming movies, rather download the video, right-click on the full video link and save it to your hard-drive (“save link as” in Firefox, “save target file as” in IE). Now play the clips *from your hard-drive*. If you can play the clips, you know the problem is either with your internet connection or with your network. If you cannot play the clips, then the problem is with your computer. Make sure you have installed the latest version of Apple QuickTime.

Why the site is not working well in Internet Explorer 6

Internet Explorer 6 is now an obsolete browser, which is why we invite you to download Firefox or Internet Explorer 8 if you prefer .

Singing Related FAQs

Do you need to have perfect pitch to have a singing career?

No. Those who have perfect pitch simply have a clear mental image of notes, and can identify the note and recall the name of the note without any external reference. Anyone can develop the ear or hearing abilities to attain relative pitch. That’s all you need. The trick is for the muscles of the voice to then memorize the production of specific notes and perform them with the command of the mind. Don’t even allow the term “toned deaf” stop you. Most people who have been labeled as such actually do hear the notes correctly, but have simply not made that physical connection yet.

Why does my voice get all shaky when I perform on stage?

When we are nervous, our breathing pattern tends to change along with a feeling of being disconnected from the present moment. If the singer performing on stage does not reconnect with a deeper, relaxed breath and refocus, he or she will surely feel a loss of control over the vocal instrument.

Why do I feel so uncomfortable during a “musical break”?

You are thinking about how uncomfortable you are during the musical break. Just because you have stopped singing, that does not mean that the message or “feelings” in the song needs to go away. Stay in the intent of the song and feel it in the music. You don’t have to dance and jump around if that is not you… just stay in the life-force of the song.

Why is my voice hoarse after a performance?

You are pushing and straining the voice.

How is it that some singers give us the shivers or make us cry?

They have found a way to truly connect with the song at a deeper level and make it their story to tell. The audience believes it– and feels it.

Will physical exercise improve my voice?

Absolutely. Singing requires breath capacity, strength and flexibility so try to find a fitness routine that touches a bit of everything (cardio, muscles toning, stretching,…).

What is the best exercise for singers?

It all depends on the person but swimming is recognized as the singer’s sport (just remember to use your nose and ear plugs!).

Do I have to watch what I eat?

A balanced diet is always best, but it is important to note that some foods may have health benefits, but are not best for the singer. Dairy (milk, cheese, chocolate,…) is one example as it leaves a heavy coat of mucus in the throat, making it more difficult for the vocal cords to do their job.

Why do singers drink so much water?

It is important for every one of us to get our 8 glasses of water a day; it is a necessity of life! As for singers, the last thing we want is a dry throat! Dehydration will lead to all kinds of problems, including lack of flexibility in the vocal instrument.

Do you have to be born with talent to become a singer?

It is said that it takes 10% of talent and 90% of practice to become a great singer. Some singers already have a well-constructed instrument for singing where as most of us need to work on our posture and all other elements of vocal training in order to get the results wanted. But let it be known that anyone, yes, ANYONE can improve their voice.

How much time will it take to see results?

It all depends on you; your starting level and how much time you are willing to put into achieving your goals. With proper knowledge of the instrument and guidance, and if you practice correctly, you should see changes even very first weeks. These may be slight at first and after about 6 months of training, the improvements should become more and more obvious. Great changes or improvements should be felt after a few years of continuous studies.

Why use warm-ups and vocalizes?

Just like athletes warm-up their muscles before performing their sport, it is always in the best interest of the singer to do the same before singing, as it requires muscles flexibility and coordination. Vocalizes are used to build up the vocal instrument (mind and body). They are less complicated than full phrases as found in songs as we are breaking things down to vowels and consonants, focusing on form and practicing proper technique, as opposed to worrying about emotions in a song or how we sound.
